November 28, 2025 (Tokyo) -- Wacom Co., Ltd announced today that the company has collaborated with Thundercomm Technology Co., Ltd., a world leading IoT product and solution provider, to develop a new Virtual Reality/Mixed Reality platform which enables digital pen input in a 3D space.

The new platform combines the VR Pen currently under development by Wacom with Thundercomm’s MR HMD Pro reference design, powered by the Qualcomm Snapdragon XR2+ Gen2 platform. The MR HMD Pro features 4-camera head tracking, Dual high-res RGB camera, TOF depth sensing, near-4K single-eye resolution (PPD ~40), Wi-Fi 7 connectivity, and ability to run multiple 3D applications simultaneously. In addition, Wacom’s Intuos Pro can be used as a “VR tablet” to work on a solid surface. The new platform allows users to draw or write in a 3D environment more directly and intuitively compared with standard VR controllers.
Wacom’s VR Pen allows users to create 3D content as well as design or sketch in a VR/MR environment while controlling pen pressure. Leveraging Wacom’s experience in pen tablet product development and applying it in a 3D environment, delivers natural pen pressure control and offers an intuitive spatial drawing experience.
Designing in a 3D space allows creators and designers to directly render three-dimensional objects exactly as they envision them, enabling a more direct and intuitive workflow than drawing on a 2D display. For intricate detailing or adding precise annotations during design feedback, “solid surface” input is often preferred so this platform is also designed to integrate with the “VR Tablet” .

For example, users can start with a full-scale automobile exterior in 3D space and then switch to detailed work on the interior control panel, alternating between the VR Pen and VR Tablet seamlessly.
Wacom expects applications across various fields for the new platform where pen usage in VR/MR spaces is crucial, including industrial design such as automobiles, 3D game content creation, and 3D solutions for medical and educational settings. Wacom aims to expand its market presence through this platform. Moving forward, Wacom and Thundercomm will cooperate with numerous HMD providers utilizing this platform to drive market development.
“Wacom will promote new design workflows for the near future in collaboration with Thundercomm,” said Nobu Ide, President and Representative Director of Wacom. “By enabling precise pen input and the ability to freely utilize space as a canvas, the two companies will provide new input tool solutions for the VR/MR industry. This will create an entirely new VR/MR experience environment for a wide range of use cases, including creators, industrial design, game development, education, and medical settings” he added.
“Through this collaboration with Wacom, Thundercomm provides the underlying MR reference platform, system software integration, and AI-enabled capabilities to jointly create a more intuitive and spatially aware digital pen experience in VR/MR environments. We are excited to work with Wacom to bring a new generation of pen-based interaction into immersive spaces. At Thundercomm, our mission is to help partners transform innovative ideas into real products through our end-to-end platform, system integration expertise, and global engineering support,” said Dongsheng Cao, CEO of Thundercomm.
